Flowers of SpaceNovember 6, 2007 - January 31, 2008Reception and discussion:
Saturday, December 8, 6:30-7:30pm Gallery hours: Directions to Neve Shalom Gallery: (see driving instructions below) For more information: Artist's Statement The works in this exhibit are the result of my deepening practice of Zen Buddhism, and increasingly in the teachings of the founder of the Soto Zen tradition Eihei Dogen Zenji. Dogen lived in early 13th century Japan and it is only in the past 50 years or so that his vast body of philosophical, religious, and poetic writings has been translated into English. Flowers of Space is the name of an essay found in Dogen's monumental work called the Shobogenzo. It refers to the difficult, but essential, Buddhist concept of emptiness. The images in this exhibit were produced by scanning original drawings and monoprints into a Macintosh computer, and then composing them, collage-like and in multiple layers, on screen. They were printed on Velvet Art Paper, using an Epson printer and archival inks. http://www.visualzen.net/ Driving Instructions: 2. Turn north at Walgreens. 3. Travel 1/2 mile. 4. Then turn right at Rainbow Village and follow the signs to Neve Shalom. We are in the building that borders the woods in back; follow the path down on the North side of the lower level circular parking lot to our painted door. |
